strip [1] VERB (stripped, stripping) 1) remove all coverings or clothes from. 2) take off one's clothes. 3) leave bare of accessories or fittings. 4) remove (paint) from a surface with solvent. 5) (strip of) deprive (someone) of (rank, power, or property). 6) sell off (the assets of a company) for profit. 7) tear the thread or teeth from (a screw, gearwheel, etc.).
NOUN 1) an act of undressing, especially in a striptease. 2) Brit. the identifying outfit worn by the members of a sports team while playing.
ORIGIN Germanic; sense 2 of the noun is perhaps from the notion of clothing to which a player ‘strips’ down.
